Our Story
Why yarn… and fabric?
Yarn Farm Kingston’s founder, Jocelyn, has been a knitter since 2003, when her friend Almaz taught her how to knit on a train from NYC to Princeton. She’s been a spinner since not long after that, when her friend Maria took her to the Maryland and NYS Sheep and Wool festivals. Jocelyn’s father Jose taught her how to sew when she was a child. As an adult she continued to sew, taking quilting classes with Christine at the City Quilter in NYC. Name a class in the fiber arts and she will want to take it, or maybe already has!
What’s with the “Farm” name?
Jocelyn worked with small-scale farmers in Africa and India for over a decade. These farmers typically had an acre or less of land. This challenge, coupled with difficulty accessing good seeds, transportation and information on fair prices, made it difficult to increase their yields and make a profit. The farmers who emerged from subsistence farming and were able to establish themselves as viable commercial farmers shared a number of traits: perseverance, an insatiable appetite for learning, a willingness to take risk and support for and from their community in the face of hardship. Our shop celebrates them and that spirit in all of us.
And the wine bar?
At Yarn Farm Kingston we offer wine, craft beer, tea, sodas and light fare, and we try to source locally. Everything we offer we love, and we offer with love. Jocelyn’s junior year of college in Bordeaux prompted her oenophilia, and her favorite yarn shop in Brooklyn back in the day was Jen and Amanda’s La Casita, NY’s original yarn shop & wine bar. YFK’s wine bar represents a watering hole for all, regardless of your beverage of choice. We offer light fare that includes delicious lobster rolls all summer long and well priced oysters on the half shell once a month (typically around the 4th weekend of the month but check our Announcements box on our Home page and our Instagram account for updates).
Tell me again… why?
Yarn Farm Kingston is our communal creative space that offers an antidote to technology. Turn off your electronics and work with our materials for a visual and tactile feast. Social media entertains, yet as human beings there is no substitute for in-real-life time together. Have a drink at our bar. Yarn Farm Kingston will nourish the soul.

"To highlight makers of color with dignity and respect and not tokenism is really important," said Robin Guy, owner of Birch Hollow Fibers. "Not like, 'Oh, OK, this will look good for us, but we value you. We want to hear you." See Guy’s interview with JoDee Kenney on Spectrum News. YFK is thrilled about JoDee’s spotlight on Birch Hollow Fibers and this talented dyer!

“There’s no greater joy than squishing yarn in person, no greater accuracy in choosing colors than seeing them in front of you, side by side with other options, and loving the result.” -Songco for Indie Untangled
