YFK Shop
We seek out what’s local or small batch as a priority and offer our patrons high quality crafting materials and finished goods, many of which are not readily accessible and would be best appreciated in person. It’s a win-win for our patrons, as well as for our artisan and small-scale suppliers.
While we are indeed a yarn shop, our sense is that many yarn lovers are cross-crafters – so we present to you fiber, fabric, small tools like weaving looms, and kits that contain everything you need to get started in a craft as well. We’ll post photos soon-ish. Or even better, come in to see for yourself!
Consider YFK more like a farmers’ market than a traditional yarn shop, and fill your basket to your heart’s delight!

Spring and Summer 2023 Offering
If you’ve come by YFK you’ve seen and squished our latest yarn in person!
Here’s a short overview of just some of the YARN that has come in since the beginning of 2023!
Lino a 100% linen in fingering weight by BC Garn/www.bcgarn.dk/ in sunshine-y colors. Pick one or many for a pleasing summer top!
Also from BC Garn, Summer in Kashmir, a 90/10 Organic Cotton/Cashmere sport weight; Bio Balance, a 55/45 Organic Wool/Organic Cotton fingering weight yarn; and Alba, a 100% Organic Cotton sportweight yarn. All are excellent for light tops you can wear in the summer and as we transition to fall.
A range of weights and colors, locally dyed by Crafter Gamer Geek. We especially love the sock kits: a 100g skein + a 20g mini skein of fingering weight yarn.
Meraki and Spree by Berroco, two cotton blends great for knit t-shirts and cool drapey summer sweaters! Meraki is a blend including cotton and hemp and Spree is wool and cotton. Come see our shop sample sweater next time you visit! Berroco offers super pattern support and many of their patterns are free! As well we are a Berroco Drop Ship site meaning we can help you order yarn that you need that we don’t have in stock, with very speedy delivery to your home.
Two luxurious options from Ito: Kinu, a silk noil lace on cones and Sensai, a 60/40 mohair silk blend perfect for holding double.
Mohonk, a 100% Lamb’s Wool two-ply fingering weight by local dyer, Jill, of Jill Draper Makes Stuff. We love it for light sweaters and shawls.
Amira Light is a new release by Langyarns, a worsted-weight organic cotton that is buttery soft.
Footprints, also by Langyarns, is a variegated 100g ball with great yardage. We’d recommend it for the Hudson Valley Yarn Trail featured knit shawl, Reyna… come see our sample! We’ve also heard it makes a sweet baby sweater.
YFK loves Loopy Mango and we are happy to share with you their Summer yarn, a bulky 100% cotton. Baby blankets, and open/fat gauge tops work great for this yarn. A nice pick for a vegan yarn as well.
A restock of colors of solids and variegated worsted weight yarn from Manos del Uruguay, Alegria Grande. What you can do with this yarn is infinite! Sweaters, baby clothes, accessories… Also from Manos is Feliz, a 70/30 merino/modal sportweight blend.
Four yarn options from mYak Tibetan Fibers: Kupa, a 50/50 Baby Yak and Organic Cotton; a 50/50 Baby Yak/Silk Light Fingering; a lace 100% cashmere and a medium weight 100% cashmere. All ethically sourced!
We also have a range of all-inclusive CRAFT KITS for your crafting pleasure. They include:
Latch hook in a few designs - bee, sunset vibes, ocean floor and more!
Sewing in styles to match your fancy - counted cross stitch, needlepoint, and embroidery.
Our embroidery kits include new designs from Jessica Long Embroidery and Un-Kits from Trailhead Yarns that you can use with their bright and happy hand-dyed tencel floss.
Try out Japanese sashiko with pretty sashiko panels by Daruma/Yakota, paired with traditional sashiko embroidery floss.
Last but not least, fiber arts-related gifts in the house!
Come see Indigo Lane’s pretty fiber-inspired jewelry! We have Lany’s sterling silver earrings and pendant crochet hooks, made just nearby in her Poughkeepsie studio.
We present to you a yarn ball holder that is as beautiful as it is functional. We carry three types of wood so far: cherry, maple and purpleheart. Yarn comes off the wine effortlessly, without introducing additional twist to your yarn (as a traditional yarn bowl does). It’s also very portable as the shaft pulls out and stores (magnetically) in the wood base.
And much more! Hope to see you (again) soon!
Winter 2022 Offering
allstitch studio’s goal is elegant tools for the modern knitter. Ok we’re listening... And so we sampled their flower stitch markers and were hooked! They are pretty, practical, and a tactile pleasure to slip from one needle to the other as you knit. Who would have thought even this part of your knitting experience could be enhanced?
Jade at Cats’ View Farm in Germantown produces little bars of happiness. That is, soap using only fresh, whole, hormone and antibiotic-free goats’ milk and nourishing oils. No chemicals, preservatives, powdered milk, fillers or detergents! It’s a perfect pick-me-up self-care treat that we have in a range of uplifting scents.
Black indie dyer Robin Guy of Birch Hollow Fibers is based in the Hudson Valley and is inspired by, among other things, nature, her family and books she is reading. We were delighted to host her on a Saturday in early December and we continue to have her dreamy yarn in three weights: bulky, DK and sock. Robin brought Siren’s Song, an exclusive colorway she designed for YFK inspired by our location on the Kingston waterfront and our shop colors – purple and green.
We are slowly bringing in small batches of fabric for projects and hand or machine sewing. First, this fall we introduced two of our picks: a 100% linen in a range of colors – baby pink, baby blue, lime green, coral red, mustard yellow, navy blue, wine and natural; and a handful of vibrant cotton African wax prints. These we thought just perfect to pair with our Miyako bag straps (see below). This winter we present a limited selection of cotton fabrics from afar: cotton prints from Sri Lanka and hand block prints from Gujarat, India. Both are also good for Miyako no-sew and traditional sewn bags, or for clothing, accessories or home goods that you dream of yourself.
Adding to our fiber from Buckwheat Bridge Farm and Crafter Gamer Geek presented this Autumn (undyed and dyed, respectively), we are slowly introducing more and more fiber for our Yarn Farm Spinners. We now have Bluefaced Leicester combed top (excellent for beginners and what we use in our beginner intensive class), alpaca, Romney (fleece), and other fiber dyed and undyed in braids, roving, and for sale by weight.
For our Yarn Farm Weavers and those curious about weaving, we’ve launched our weaving tools offering with two three sizes (we’ve recently brought in an XL size with stand!) of Funem Studio’s weaving looms that allow you to make tapestry weavings and also yardage! These are in addition to the continuous weaving looms we have that are locally made by woodworker Fred Ricci - a different weaving technique but similarly compact and portable.
Furoshiki bags were a big hit in our Autumn offerings and so many of our Miyako straps flew out the door. We’re supplementing the straps with printed furoshiki fabric squares that work with our leather bag straps (restocked!) or on their own to wrap gifts. Here’s one link on this Japanese folding technique.
Galler Yarns This Lower Hudson Valley-based company has been creating luxury yarns for over 70 years. We are so happy to partner with Star Galler, granddaughter of Joseph Galler who founded the company in the 1950’s. Our first collaboration is a pre-launch of Galler’s latest yarn line, Wool You Be My Baby, in Valentine, a deep and rich ruby color. This is an exciting new release as well as a fundraiser! 25% of your purchase price of Valentine will be donated to a non-profit working to fight heart disease and promote heart health. We’re using this yarn for a PetiteKnit Sophie Shawl.
One of our wine bar/gift picks is the British Gluggle. It’s a worldwide ceramic icon, and continues to be handcrafted – hand cast, hand dipped, and hand finished – in the UK. At YFK we use ours for water… come by to hear it gurgle, and maybe take one home for your very own! We have fish and roosters in fabulous fun colors. Jocelyn’s Peace Corps friend Almaz (Ethiopian-American living in Belgium) raved about hers and everyone in our Peace Corps girlfriends’ group got one to stay hydrated and happy!
We’ve kicked off our handsewing offerings with kits from Jessica Long Embroidery and love so much of her story. She tries to make designs that make people smile (check), she was initially terrified about hand embroidery when first starting (yes! Starting something new can be like that!), and she appreciates that this craft teaches us to be easy and in the moment. Pick up a kit… it’s self-contained, all-you-need, portable creativity.
Knit.Coffee Company offers a whole bean Italian medium roast coffee roasted right here in the Hudson Valley. The coffee is organically grown and kosher with a low acid profile and smooth taste. You could drink Knit.Coffee coffee all day long! The company founder is a phenomenal small business promoter and collaborator and one of YFK’s early cheerleaders, and for this we appreciate her very much!
Manos del Uruguay not only has beautiful kettle-dyed yarn, but a beautiful business approach! Manos is a non-profit cooperative in Uruguay that aims to provide work to women artisans in rural areas and preserve local crafts and traditions. Certain of their yarns are also handspun, including one of our in-shop picks, Wool Clasica a 100% Corriedale aran weight single, slightly thick and thin. Lest you think good deeds and good business don’t go with high fashion, check out this article on a recent event by designer Gabriela Hearst and Manos at Bergdorf Goodman.
Miyako Designs has taken a Japanese furoshiki design a la francaise. This small French company produces leather bag straps for both no-sew and traditional sewn bags. The no-sew furoshiki bag straps have been so popular at YFK already, for both project bags and everyday bags. Come by to see how it’s done or watch right here! We met Laetita, company owner, earlier this year. Her enthusiasm for her products is exuberant and infectious, and well-deserved! When we asked her how many colors we should offer she said, “Toutes les couleurs!” (All of them!) We couldn’t agree more Laetitia.
For our felting goods we’ve started with kits for our Yarn Farm Friends. Our shop associate Nathalie proposed Petit Felts! Jocelyn Gayle Krodman, the established maker behind this company, is based right here in Kingston. Each kit has everything you need to handsculpt wool into a petite felted cutie. Great for beginners as well as experienced wool sculptors.
We’ve brought in Clover’s punch needle hoops and punch needles to our notions and tools offerings. This Autumn, in the space of three days in one week, two different customers came in asking about punch needle tools. Here’s our answer! Clover is an established company (Japan/US) offering high quality, well-priced crafts tools and notions that have been part of our own crafting journey for many many years. You’ll see more of their solid products at YFK in the future for sure.
This one straddles our yarn shop and wine bar. During the holiday makers’ season we sampled local maple syrup from Tree Juice Maple Syrup, in the best way. On Christmas morning Todd made a full breakfast and we had pancakes with their variations of maple syrup. Crazy yum. We are offering small bottles of a small handful of flavors: maple syrup (straight up), vanilla infused maple syrup, blueberry maple syrup and (OUR FAVORITE) bourbon barrel maple syrup. Come by and try them all.
Autumn 2022 Offering
Battenkill Fibers is producing YFK’s House Yarn, which we will offer au naturel and also, from time to time, dyed by us. We love how the lighter weight yarns (fingering, DK) play well with other yarn like kidsilk mohair… and how the natural colors blend and soften dyed hues when two different yarns are held together — very hygge. Battenkill’s founder, Mary Jeanne, is a force in the sustainable fiber industry and co-founded the Hudson Valley Textile Project, a community of farmers, dyers, millers, designers, makers, distributors, and retailers that work towards a farm to fashion fiber chain that supports local growers, processors, artisans, manufacturers and consumers. YFK is a member of the HVTP.
Aleksandra and Tomasz are a wife and husband team that own and manage Bobbiny, a Poland-based company that produces 100% natural cotton cords made from recycled content and that come in various thicknesses and a dizzying array of colors, from classic to very now. Bobbiny cords are perfect for macrame, crochet and other crafts, including for little recipients since these cords are certified as non-toxic and safe for children.
Buckwheat Bridge Farm and YFK are partnering to offer this farm’s limited/final (for now?) inventory. It is truly special and unique, being farm to skein. The fiber comes from the farm’s own livestock, and it was spun and dyed on the farm using energy generated on-farm. While that is already impressive, after squishing and seeing this yarn you’ll sing their praises yourself — it’s breathtakingly soft and dreamy.
Crafter Gamer Geek is a fiber artist based in neighboring Highland who offers hand dyed yarn inspired by gaming and anime. David Freer’s fun colorways are absolutely as entertaining as gaming, in our humble opinion. Not enough for you? We are also calling on David to host game nights once our wine bar is in full swing. Game on!
cowgirlblues is a Cape Town-based dye house and design studio specializing in South African wool and mohair. Their colors dazzle and provide a dose of joy as we head into the chilly months in this hemisphere. Jocelyn met cowgirlblues founder Bridget and her dyeing team on a work trip in 2013? (2016?) to Cape Town and couldn’t be more thrilled to introduce this yarn in a significant way to YFK patrons this autumn in our launch portfolio. This yarn is in transit (with customs at JFK) and we hope to have it in hand for your visit this weekend!
Jocelyn met Lagusta of Lagusta’s Luscious at a recent event hosted by Chronogram in Kingston, a few days later sampled her wares, and was immediately hooked. Lagusta’s artisanal chocolates are nourishing on so many levels, from the artful presentation and unique flavor combinations, to the company’s ethos… 100% vegan and ethical cacao sourcing + local ingredients. PS Lagusta’s Cafe in neighboring displays amigurumi dolls of team members who have been with the company for 2+ years (Jocelyn is wondering if she can moonlight there that is SO awesome).
Fred Ricci of Hudson Valley Wooden Bowls produces one-of-a-kind handturned yarn bowls, charcuterie boards and weaving looms for YFK. Not only does he excel in workworking, he knows a thing or two about what supports fiber artists in our craft. Fred is the father-in-law of Getting Purly with It, Nancy Ricci!
Jill Draper Makes Stuff needs no introduction in this part of the world and the fiber universe more generally. A pioneer in the sheep-to-skein movement, Jill’s color aesthetic is jaw-dropping and quintessentially Hudson Valley.
Kelbourne Woolen works with manufacturers that aim for high-quality production paired with environmental and social practices that respect and value the planet. Founders Courtney and Kate’s Lucky Tweed is particularly irresistible, an authentic Donegal Tweed yarn in fashion-forward colors, made with soft merino.
Loopy Mango offers unmistakably LOOPY yarn perfect for beginners and experts alike that epitomizes the feeling of “must squish”, not to mention relatively instant gratification! A quick knit hat of scrumptious Italian yarn in bold hues feels like a knitter’s bon bon! And yet their comprehensive patterns mean you could make an entire Loopy wardrobe and home accessories. We especially love that Loopy’s female co-founders Anna and Oejong make their home and HQ in the Hudson Valley — so we can always dash over to get more yarn! PS we are sharing an extensive Loopy Mango trunk show beginning later in Oct… come see a few pieces this weekend then come back for more!
Tampicobags found us reconceptualizing what we could offer as a project bag at YFK, not to mention bags that would have wider appeal to our wine bar patrons. Tampicobags are 100% produced in France by a family-owned company using natural materials and simple design. We think they are perfect for holding your favorite projects, your gear for a weekend away, and/or your everyday essentials for around town. Their Fall/Winter colors take our breath away and perfectly capture the Hudson Valley at this time of year.
We’ve selected Utopia Bath Ltd. best sellers and love the light, non-greasy yet sooo moisturizing effect of Merilyn’s products. Merilyn, who is based on the south shore of Long Island, knows what fiber artists need to care for our most important tool — our hands! Our feet soak up her goodies as well, at the end of a day at our shop.
YFK loves the double-punch of Yara Shea Beauty products: moisturizing well with the key ingredient of shea butter — and doing good. Nguzo, the Bronx-based maker, uses the brand's proceeds to promote the dignity of girls and young women in Nigeria. Ghanaian and Nigerian women in Yara's production process gain improved livelihoods. YFK embraces and celebrates Nguzo’s stance of using African resources to solve Africa’s problems.
