Have a spinning wheel but don’t know how to use it, or need a refresher? Want to get one but unsure what to do next? Shop for your wheel at Yarn Farm and this course is free with your purchase of a wheel! (Talk to Jocelyn to learn more.)
In this short-form beginner intro class we focus on getting you on your wheel and spinning! In contrast to our one-day intensive, there will be less attention to the technical aspects of your wheel and the difference between methods of spinning. (If you’d like to take that longer class or potentially a private session, email us so we can get a sense of demand and add the intensive to our 2026 calendar!)
You’ll learn how to:
Pre-draft fiber to help make spinning at your wheel easier
Change settings on your wheel to increase/decrease “take up” (how hard your wheel pulls your spun yarn from you)
Identify fiber that is good for beginners (wool! and certain breeds in particular) vs. better for more intermediate spinners (silk!)
We’ll give you an overview of the parts of a spinning wheel and what they do, and give you feedback on your spinning to help you spin better! We’ll explain what you do with your yarn after it’s on your bobbin, so you can continue to this step after class at home.
Bring your own wheel. You must have a wheel of your own or that you borrow from a friend. Email us to check if we have loaner wheel(s) that you can use (if available, rental fee is an additional $25/session).
Course fee: $75, includes 4 oz of beginner-friendly spinning fiber. Does not include use of a spinning wheel. Bring your own wheel.
Teacher: Jocelyn Songco
