Sashiko stitching
Sashiko, a Japanese form of embroidery well over a hundred years old, has exploded in popularity lately! Unsurprising as it’s both beautiful and functional.
The foundation of sashiko is the rhythm of stitching, using a special plate thimble made of metal. In this class Jocelyn will share how to use this thimble and an overview of sashiko as taught by Atsushi Futatsuya, a third generation master sashiko artist. (For more on Atsushi and opportunities to learn directly from this master, see his website and Instagram.)
Class plan: 2 to 2 ½ hours of active teaching followed by time for in-shop practice stitching and support.
Teacher: Jocelyn Songco
Class Size: min 2 and max 8
Class fee $65 and materials fee $20, or a total cost of $85.
Materials provided: metal plate thimble, one skein (20 meters) of sashiko embroidery floss, one sashiko needle, and one 100% cotton or linen fat quarter.
Cancellation Policy (updated 4/16/25): Group classes require one week's notice before the first class for store credit. No credit issued after this time, including no-shows on the day-of. If the class is cancelled by us because we have not met the stated minimum number of students, you will receive a full refund. Visible Mending: Patching + Darning with Cal Patch
Welcome Cal Patch!
Mending is an essential part of maintaining your handmade or Slow-Fashion wardrobe, and patching and darning are your key techniques. Cal will show you 2 different ways to patch a hole in woven garments: Overlay and Reverse Applique, various stitches that work for each method, and when to use them. Then we will mend a hole in a knitted garment with traditional darning. Whether you try to do it invisibly or artfully, you’ll extend the life of your favorite woolies by knowing how to darn them. Traditional darning works well for smaller holes or areas that are worn thin. You might have so much fun, you'll actually be happy to see a new hole in your most-loved and worn garments! No prerequisite skills.
Please bring:
2 items (woven or T-shirt) with holes to be patched, or a piece of fabric to become a “mending sampler”
Scraps of woven and knit fabric for patches
Hand-sewing needles in a few sizes
All-purpose, buttoncraft, or top-stitching thread
Embroidery floss (Cal suggests size 8 Perle Cotton)
Pins
Scissors
A sock, sweater or other knit item with a small* hole to be darned (can be hand or machine knit)
Small amount of comparable-sized yarn to what the original is knit from (probably between fingering and worsted), can be matching or contrast
Tapestry needles in a few smaller sizes (or any needles with a large enough eye for yarn)
*about 1” or less
Note: Cal will bring extra supplies to share (especially fabric scraps and yarn), so don't worry if you don't have everything! Bring what you have. You can also shop for selected supplies at Yarn Farm Kingston as needed: hand sewing needles and various kinds of embroidery floss including hand-dyed thread!
Teacher: Cal Patch
Class Size: min 3 and max 5
Class Fee: $90
Cancellation Policy (updated 4/16/25): Group classes require one week's notice before the first class for store credit. No credit issued after this time, including no-shows on the day-of. If the class is cancelled by us because we have not met the stated minimum number of students, you will receive a full refund. In this class you’ll learn how to use a drop spindle and draft (handle) wool fiber specially prepared for spinning into yarn. After learning the basics, proficiency in spinning yarn will come with practice over time, keep at it!
Teacher: Jocelyn Songco
Class Size: min 2 and max 5

Beyond Sashiko Stitching – Sashiko Part 2
Welcome back sashiko stitchers! This is Part 2 of our sashiko series. To register you must have already taken Sashiko Stitching at Yarn Farm Kingston and learned how to use a palm thimble. If you register without having taken the first class, Sashiko Stitching, you may use your credit to sign up for that class first on a future date that it is offered, take the value in store credit, or get a refund less processing fees charged to us by our payments processor Square.
In this two-hour follow up class, we will go beyond the technical use of the palm thimble and venture into using various sashiko patterns (through cloth carbon paper, chalk pencils, stencils, rulers and more) and how to use sashiko to strengthen, mend and embellish your fabric.
Jocelyn will share these techniques as taught to her by Atsushi Futatsuya, a third generation master sashiko artist. (For more on Atsushi and opportunities to learn directly from this master, see his website and Instagram.)
Your materials fee will cover all the essential materials and tools for class (and reflects 10% off) and are yours to keep. The kit will *not* include a sashiko needle and thimble; bring these from your first class or buy them at Yarn Farm as needed.
You may shop for additional sashiko materials and tools the day of class and use a 10% discount. (Yay!)
Teacher: Jocelyn Songco
Class Size: min 2 and max 8
Class fee $50 and materials fee $50, or a total cost of $100.
Materials provided: piece of carbon paper, chalk pencil, 100% cotton sashiko fabric (1 yard), pins, printed copies of sashiko designs, plastic sheet for use with carbon paper, ruler with cut out circles/templates, large skein (145 meters) of bright white sashiko thread. Note due to sourcing constraints the exact materials are subject to change slightly; however, the materials kit value will be at least $50 and you will get everything you need to learn the techniques in the class and design more after that!
Bring with you: sashiko needle(s) and palm thimble (or buy at Yarn Farm Kingston), garments with holes for mending or items for embellishing.
(This class will also be offered on Sunday, July 20 from 10am-12pm.)
Cancellation Policy (updated 4/16/25): Group classes require one week's notice before the first class for store credit. No credit issued after this time, including no-shows on the day-of. If you have not yet taken Beginner Crochet – Part 1 but want to take this class, please call or come by to chat with us about the suitability of this class for you.
For this class, no materials purchase is required. Just bring your yarn that you purchased for Beginner Crochet 1!

Wet Felting a Birdhouse Redux with Carlise
Learn the fun and relaxing technique of wet felting by making a bird house. Wet felted bird houses are an eco-friendly and sustainable natural art.
Have you wet felted a birdhouse at Yarn Farm in the past? This is a NEW take on it! We will be exploring colors and more vibrant designs for a more decorative birdhouse rather than a house for birds.
Your instructor Carlise will guide you in shaping your template so you can build your house on a resist. You will learn how to prepare wool fiber for wet felting, process your fiber so that it felts and then full the felt so that it becomes a sturdy structure. The last process is to mold your structure so that it dries in the shape you intended.
The class is beginner friendly, hands on and you get to take your adorable birdhouse home for your sweet feathered friends!
Course Fee: $80 includes wet felting materials and use of tools
Teacher: Carlise Azmitia, Hudson Valley Atelier
Materials: Wool, embellishments, and resist will be provided, included in course fee.

Machine Sew Fabric Buckets with Cal Patch
Welcome Cal Patch!
Use it as a basket, a bag, a hold-all: once you make one fabric bucket, you'll come up with all kinds of uses for them! This is a great project to renew your sewing skills and bump them up a notch, and a fun way to use smaller pieces of textiles you've printed, dyed or collected. Cal will teach you how to piece fabrics together, sew a curved edge to a straight edge, make straps and pockets, and you'll leave with a beautiful reversible container.
Skill level required: Beginner Plus. Students must bring their own sewing machine and know the bare basics of how to use it: how to thread it and make a simple seam.
Please bring:
· 1/2 yard of outer fabric (medium weight woven cotton, like denim, canvas, quilting cotton -- can be smaller pieces that add up to about 1/2 yard)

(This class is also offered on Sunday, May 25 from 10am-12pm.)

Regrets, cancelled - did not reach class size minimum.
Ready to go beyond beginner knitting?
Learn to make a pair of toe-up socks at the same time by Magic Loop with Dania. You should be comfortable casting on and knitting in the round. Experience making socks is not required.
By making your socks at the same time, you may experience increased knitting satisfaction by:
Avoiding second sock syndrome, a common affliction for knitters who make socks
Matching the socks to each other with way less note-taking and frustration
Feeling like a genius!
This class meets for two 90-minute sessions on Thurs April 17 and April 24 at 6pm. Regrets, no makeups.
Teacher: Dania Rajendra
Class Size: min 2 and max 8
Class fee $90
Materials fee: We kindly request that you purchase your yarn for class from us, which helps our business sustainability! You will get 10% off your yarn for class, as well as needles/notions for class as needed. We recommend the sock yarn from local dyers Into the Whirled, Crafter Gamer Geek, and Newburgh. We strongly recommend two different colors for your first pair. Please wind or cake your yarn before class.
Please bring:

Needles and notions, unless you’d like to purchase them at Yarn Farm. You will get 10% off any yarn and/or supplies purchased for class.
Locking stitch makers
Your yarn, wound or caked in advance
Tapestry needle for finishing and weaving in ends.
Circular needle with a 40” cable at the size you need to achieve gauge
About choosing your needle:
Success and pleasure with Magic Loop depends in large part on your needles. To make these socks, you’ll need one pair of circular needles in the size that you need to produce gauge (usually size 1 or 2) with a 40” cable. It is important that your cable be thin and flexible, not stiff. Brands known for this include ChiaGoo (the cables on their needles are nylon-coated steel) and Addi (the cables are nylon). If you’re working with interchangeable needles, please be sure to bring the tools to connect your needles to the cables, as Magic Loop twisting can loosen the join.
Cancellation Policy: Full refund less credit card processing fee (effective 4/11/23) is provided for any cancellation up to one week before the class date. Credit towards another class is provided for any cancellation made from six days through the day before the class date. No credit or refunds issued after this time, including no-shows on the day-of. Beginner Lap Loom Weaving - Part 2
In this class, you will learn to warp your lap loom, and add texture through rya knots and soumak, in a very small group setting that is conducive to learning! (In Beginner Weaving – Part 1 we weave on a pre-warped lap loom and learn plain weave.)
You may come to this class once or multiple times, whatever supports your learning! It is offered roughly every other month, and you can take it any time after you have taken Part 1. This class is for absolute beginners but also a good option if you learned how to weave in the past and would like a refresher. It's a great option if you have purchased a lap loom and would like step by step guidance in how to warp your loom. We think it's ideal to learn foundational skills in a live, in-person class, after which you may choose to build on your skills with youtube videos if you learn well through this medium.
If you haven't purchased a lap loom from YFK already, you will weave on a loom that is on loan to you for the duration of the class, with access to materials (yarn, roving) during the class. Should you wish to buy a loom after your class, you may use a 10% student discount on your loom purchase.
Teacher: Jocelyn Songco
Class Size: min 2 and max 6
Class Fee: $50 (for each Beginner Weaving – Part 2 class that you choose to attend)
Your class fee includes a complementary cup of tea or coffee, in addition to use of the lap loom and a variety of materials for weaving during your class.
If the class is cancelled by us because we have not met the stated minimum number of students, you will receive a full refund.

This class is offered roughly once a month and you can take it right after you take Part 1, or after some time has passed, as your schedule permits. Regrets cancelled - Macrame a Row Counter
Regrets cancelled - did not reach minimum.
Learn how to tie knots with a hemp/cotton cord and string on numbered beads in order to make a row counter. This type of row counter is similar to others that are sold commercially that are made from metal and beads with differences – notably it’s softer and it’s fairly easy and economical to make yourself, without any need for jewelry making/metalwork knowledge.
You’ll learn the general steps to make the row counter, and how it’s used, and how you can customize yours to make it your very own. During, or after the class, you’ll likely want to make more than one, to have for each work-in-progress!

Hand Sew Your Own Shirt with Cal Patch: 3 of 3
Welcome Cal Patch!
Series of three 2-hour classes on Mar 16, 23 and 30
Sewing on a machine is quick and practical, but for many it’s difficult to find the dedicated time and space required to make it a regular habit. Moving your sewing practice into the realm of handwork (like knitting, crochet, and embroidery) means you can stitch up garments whenever (and wherever) you have a few spare minutes, or on the couch at night while watching a movie, and carry a project with you so you always have it. Amazingly, you might find you can finish a hand-sewn garment sooner than a machine-sewn one!
Cal will teach you how to work with a pattern (see supply list below for options) for a simple, boxy top and learn how to sew seams, finish necklines and hem edges with only your hands and a needle and thread. Several methods for each type of seam will be shown, so you may also create a sampler of extra techniques.
Both decorative and functional stitching techniques will take your slow-fashion wardrobe to the next level, and add an element of meditative calm to your sewing. On future projects you can use your new skills in combination with machine sewing, or entirely on their own.
No prerequisite skills, though an understanding of basic sewing principles will be helpful. You will need to have your pieces (front and back only, skip any facings) cut out before start of class.
Please bring shirt pattern and the supplies below:
- Pattern* for simple top (see list below)
- Fabric: light-to-medium weight woven cotton, linen or blend. Quantity as indicated for your size** on pattern, but 2 yards is probably sufficient for most. Solid fabric is best to see your stitches, but print is ok too.
- Front and Back pieces ALREADY CUT OUT of your fabric (no need for any facings included in pattern). Please use simplest version with no added seams or sleeves!
- Fat quarter or approximately 12-18” square of similar or same fabric (could be a scrap left over after cutting) for sampler
- Bias tape, 1 yard of ½” single-fold, can be self-made or packaged
- All-purpose thread, can be contrast (to see your stitches) or matching and/or size 8 Perle Cotton
- Hand-sewing needles in a few sizes, or your favorite size
- Pins
- Scissors
- Marking tool (chalk, wax or pencil) and ruler
-Optional: Thimble
*Please use one of the following patterns, or similar top:
Boxy Tee/Drapy Tunic drafted in a previous class with Cal, or from her online video class, or tutorial found on her website (NOTE: please just do the simple version without the seam and pocket)

**These are loose-fitting tops, so you should be fine to choose the size called for according to your measurements. But if you are very concerned about a perfect fit, you may wish to machine-stitch a muslin/fit sample first to confirm size.

REGRETS cancelled - Machine Sew Fabric Buckets with Cal Patch
Regrets, cancelled - did not reach class size minimum.
Welcome Cal Patch!
Use it as a basket, a bag, a hold-all: once you make one fabric bucket, you'll come up with all kinds of uses for them!

REGRETS cancelled - Fanciful Crochet Edgings with Cal Patch
Regrets cancelled - didn’t reach min size.
Welcome Cal Patch!
Whether you’ve knit, crocheted, sewn or (GASP!) bought it from a store, anything can benefit from a beautiful crochet edge! Crochet is incredibly versatile, and can be refined and delicate, or freeform and wild, open and meshy, or dense and ornate, and it’s so easy to add on to a finished piece that just needs a little pizzazz or polish. You can use these edgings on clothing, pillowcases, blankets or virtually anything with an edge. In this 3-hour class Cal will teach you three simple edgings and three fancier ones, useful for any kind of project. Students should have a grasp of the basic stitches: Chain, Single, Double and Triple Crochet
Please bring and/or shop for these supplies: Scrap yarn (worsted to fingering), compatible crochet hooks, knit, crochet or woven swatches to work onto (can be old gauge swatches, cut from old machine-knit sweaters, t-shirts, or fleece)

Crochet a Mia Tote Bag with Nathalie
(3/14/25 update: min class size reached, class confirmed! A few spots left as of today!)
Ready to go beyond beginner crochet?
Learn to make a Mia Tote Bag using 9mm Bobbiny cotton cord with Nathalie in this two-hour session!
Nathalie will take you step by step through the pattern steps to make this chunky and fabulous tote bag complete with fun tassel from the same cotton cord. It’s a fairly quick and super satisfying crochet project and makes a wonderful gift for yourself or a friend. Even better, come to class with a friend and make one together! You’ll chose Bobbiny 9mm crochet cord ($33-39) with a large crochet hook for super bulky yarn. The pattern calls for a 16mm hook, so bring or buy this hook from Yarn Farm. Many large hooks will work just fine, e.g., O-P-Q, or 12mm-16mm. You may also wish to add an optional leather cross-body strap ($25-27) for added versatility of your tote.

REGRETS cancelled - I Love You Highland Cow
Regrets cancelled - didn’t reach class minimum size.
Three sessions on Fridays 3/7, 3/14 and 3/21 from 6-7pm!
Ready to go beyond beginner crochet?
This March you’ll crochet your own Highland Cow to love! We will meet on three Fridays in March: 3/7, 3/14 and 3/21 from 6-7pm and Jocelyn will guide you through the pattern instructions as planned below. After the hourlong class, you'll have the option to stay longer to continue hooking and hanging out with other Highland Cow fans! Jocelyn will be available for help during this time.
Our plan: Class 1 - crochet four legs and start belly. Class 2 - continue belly and body and start head. Class 3 - complete head, add safety eyes, make horns, ears and tail. Finish your Highland Cow in class 3 or at home, depending on your pace.
Kit comes with an appropriate sized crochet hook (G). That said, bring your own hooks if you have any! The crochet hooks included in kits are often plastic or metal and may be less comfortable than the hooks you can buy individually. If you would like to buy a hook from Yarn Farm you’ll have 10% off your purchase while a student in this class.
This class is for advanced beginner crocheters. You should know how to chain stitch, slip stitch, and make single crochet stitches. Some experience seaming your crochet fabric is helpful but not required.
Teacher: Jocelyn Songco
Class Size: min 2 and max 10
Class fee $100, includes Highland Cow amigurumi kit with yarn, pair of safety eyes, crochet hook size G, tapestry needle, and full color pattern booklet. Kit does not include stuffing; Yarn Farm will provide this as part of your class fee.
Regrets, there are no make ups for missed classes.

REGRETS cancelled - Knit Cabled Fingerless Mitts
REGRETS cancelled - didn’t reach min size.
Ready to go beyond beginner knitting?
Are you comfortable-ish knitting in the round and making a cable, but not necessarily at the same time?
Learn how to cable in small circumference knitting to make terrifically textured fingerless mitts. Use either magic loop or double-pointed needles (DPNs). We’ll use the free Valentine Mitts pattern by Robbyn Kenyon available on Ravelry. The finished mitts are about 10” from top to bottom and should comfortably fit a hand with anywhere from a 6 to a 9.5” circumference (measurement taken around the palm, above the thumb). You’ll used worsted- or aran-weight yarn.
In this class we will start the first glove, knitting in the round and cabling straightaway. We’ll continue onto the gusset and you’ll see how this clever pattern commandeers one of the cables for the gusset in the mitt. (What’s a gusset you say? We’ll explain this and more!)
Time permitting we’ll continue past the gusset, bind-off, rejoin, and then choose-your-own-adventure to end your mitt with more cables or with ribbing. Time not permitting, we’ll coach you on how to complete your mitt and mitt #2 at home.
Skills required: long tail cast on, knit, purl, bind off, knitting in the round (magic loop or DPNs), and comfort using a cable needle (strong proficiency isn’t required)
Teacher: Jocelyn Songco
Class Size: min 2 and max 5
Class fee $65, includes $5 store credit*
Materials fee: We kindly request that you purchase your yarn for class from us, which helps our business sustainability! You will get $5 store credit valid the day of class towards your yarn/needles/notions for class.

US Size 6 (4mm) 40 in circular needle with flexible cord OR US 6 double-pointed needles and a row counter and a stitch marker, if you have this already at home. You can also purchase any/all of these items at Yarn Farm.
*Store credit: The $5 store credit may be used solely towards the purchase of yarn and needles for your class and on the date of your class, or in the week prior if you’d like to shop in advance. There is no cash value for the $5 store credit offered as part of this class.
