NEW TIME-Befriend Your Sewing Machine with Cal Patch
Updated 3/6/25: NEW TIME - we’ll start at 12pm (not 1pm) to accommodate changes in our teacher’s schedule, thank you!
Welcome Cal Patch!
Do you have a sewing machine in your closet, but have never used it? Or you want to sew, but the last time you stitched anything up was in Home Ec class in 8th grade? If you are looking for a low-commitment class to get acquainted with your machine (or reacquainted with the art of sewing), this is the one for you! In this 3-hour session, you will learn how to thread your machine and wind a bobbin, sew a simple seam, and hem edges. You will make either a pillowcase, tote bag, or drawstring pouch. From this start you’ll have a foundation for moving on to all kinds of sewing projects, and your machine may just become your very BEST friend!
NOTE: Cal is not a repair person. Please be sure your machine is in working order; if in doubt, have it serviced. Bring the machine’s manual (most can be downloaded if the original isn’t available).
Bring these supplies:
– sewing machine
– 1/2 yard or more fabric: any basic woven, printed or solid cottons, denim, twill, etc. (Optional: 1 yard ribbon for handles or drawstring, or trims for decoration)
– all-purpose thread to match
– sharp fabric-cutting scissors
– pins and pincushion
– seam ripper
– tailor’s chalk/wax
– ruler
Yarn Farm Kingston will have basic sewing kits and a small selection of fabric available for purchase if needed!

Flying Vee, Summer Tee! Class 1 of 2
Two session 2-hour course meeting on 6/15 and 6/29.
Ready to go beyond beginner knitting?
Just in time for summer, knit a Flying Vee tee shirt by Stephanie Earp in a two-part class with Dania. This top is easy to wear and fun to make - it's knit side-to-side! Go beyond beginner knitting and learn increases, decreases, German short rows, shaping, and seaming. This flattering top is the perfect showcase for a speckled, hand-dyed fingering weight skein and makes a great first-sweater project.
Choose one skein from our stock of Into the Whirled, Barn Yarn, Crafter Gamer Geek or cowgirlblues sock skeins, and pair it with another from the same dyer or something more solid to show it off, like Newburgh Yarn Company or Amano. Or, if you have a sock skein you've been hoarding, perhaps this is the project it's meant to be. Bring it in to find a match. And speckles are not required - choose a bold contrast of two solid colors to lean into the cool, graphic quality of the design!
According to the pattern you'll need:
size US 4 (3.5mm) circular needles with a 24" cable (or size needed to obtain gauge)
Three stitch markers
Bring or buy these things for class. Please purchase your pattern from the designer here on your own and bring a printout and/or digital copy to class. (This pattern is not one that we can sell through Ravelry in-store sales.)
Please come to class with your yarn wound or caked, and/or come early before your first class to allow time to shop and have your yarn wound.
Teacher: Dania Rajendra
Class size: min 2 and max 5
Class fee: $120 for two 2-hour classes on 6/15 and 6/29. Class fee does not include pattern, yarn, or needles/notions. You will get 10% off any full-price yarn you purchase for this class.
Regrets, there are no makeups for missed classes.
Cancellation Policy (updated 4/16/25): Group classes require one week's notice before the first class for store credit. No credit issued after this time, including no-shows on the day-of. If the class is cancelled by us because we have not met the stated minimum number of students, you will receive a full refund.

NEW DATE: Beginner Lap Loom Weaving - Part 2
In this class, you will learn to warp your lap loom, and add texture through rya knots and soumak, in a very small group setting that is conducive to learning! (In Beginner Weaving – Part 1 we weave on a pre-warped lap loom and learn plain weave.)

It's a great option if you have purchased a lap loom and would like step by step guidance in how to warp your loom. If you haven't purchased a lap loom from YFK already, you will weave on a loom that is on loan to you for the duration of the class, with access to materials (yarn, roving) during the class. Should you wish to buy a loom after your class, you may use a 10% student discount on your loom purchase.

Wet Felting a Birdhouse Redux with Carlise
Learn the fun and relaxing technique of wet felting by making a bird house. Wet felted bird houses are an eco-friendly and sustainable natural art.
Have you wet felted a birdhouse at Yarn Farm in the past? This is a NEW take on it! We will be exploring colors and more vibrant designs for a more decorative birdhouse rather than a house for birds.
Your instructor Carlise will guide you in shaping your template so you can build your house on a resist. You will learn how to prepare wool fiber for wet felting, process your fiber so that it felts and then full the felt so that it becomes a sturdy structure. The last process is to mold your structure so that it dries in the shape you intended.
The class is beginner friendly, hands on and you get to take your adorable birdhouse home for your sweet feathered friends!
Course Fee: $80 includes wet felting materials and use of tools
Teacher: Carlise Azmitia, Hudson Valley Atelier
Materials: Wool, embellishments, and resist will be provided, included in course fee.

Machine Sew Fabric Buckets with Cal Patch
Welcome Cal Patch!
Use it as a basket, a bag, a hold-all: once you make one fabric bucket, you'll come up with all kinds of uses for them! This is a great project to renew your sewing skills and bump them up a notch, and a fun way to use smaller pieces of textiles you've printed, dyed or collected. Cal will teach you how to piece fabrics together, sew a curved edge to a straight edge, make straps and pockets, and you'll leave with a beautiful reversible container.
Skill level required: Beginner Plus. Students must bring their own sewing machine and know the bare basics of how to use it: how to thread it and make a simple seam.
Please bring:
· 1/2 yard of outer fabric (medium weight woven cotton, like denim, canvas, quilting cotton -- can be smaller pieces that add up to about 1/2 yard)
· 1/2 yard of lining fabric (as above)
· All-purpose thread to match
· Ruler
· Basic sewing kit: Scissors (for cutting fabric), pins + pincushion, seam ripper, chalk, tape measure

Sashiko stitching
Sashiko, a Japanese form of embroidery well over a hundred years old, has exploded in popularity lately! Unsurprising as it’s both beautiful and functional.
The foundation of sashiko is the rhythm of stitching, using a special plate thimble made of metal. In this class Jocelyn will share how to use this thimble and an overview of sashiko as taught by Atsushi Futatsuya, a third generation master sashiko artist. (For more on Atsushi and opportunities to learn directly from this master, see his website and Instagram.)
Class plan: 2 to 2 ½ hours of active teaching followed by time for in-shop practice stitching and support.
Teacher: Jocelyn Songco
Class Size: min 2 and max 8
Class fee $65 and materials fee $20, or a total cost of $85.
Materials provided: metal plate thimble, one skein (20 meters) of sashiko embroidery floss, one sashiko needle, and one 100% cotton or linen fat quarter.
Cancellation Policy (updated 4/16/25): Group classes require one week's notice before the first class for store credit. No credit issued after this time, including no-shows on the day-of. If the class is cancelled by us because we have not met the stated minimum number of students, you will receive a full refund. Beyond Sashiko Stitching – Sashiko Part 2
Welcome back sashiko stitchers! This is Part 2 of our sashiko series. To register you must have already taken Sashiko Stitching at Yarn Farm Kingston and learned how to use a palm thimble. If you register without having taken the first class, Sashiko Stitching, you may use your credit to sign up for that class first on a future date that it is offered, take the value in store credit, or get a refund less processing fees charged to us by our payments processor Square.
In this two-hour follow up class, we will go beyond the technical use of the palm thimble and venture into using various sashiko patterns (through cloth carbon paper, chalk pencils, stencils, rulers and more) and how to use sashiko to strengthen, mend and embellish your fabric.
Jocelyn will share these techniques as taught to her by Atsushi Futatsuya, a third generation master sashiko artist. (For more on Atsushi and opportunities to learn directly from this master, see his website and Instagram.)
Your materials fee will cover all the essential materials and tools for class (and reflects 10% off) and are yours to keep. The kit will *not* include a sashiko needle and thimble; bring these from your first class or buy them at Yarn Farm as needed.
You may shop for additional sashiko materials and tools the day of class and use a 10% discount. (Yay!)
Teacher: Jocelyn Songco
Class Size: min 2 and max 8
Class fee $50 and materials fee $50, or a total cost of $100.
Materials provided: piece of carbon paper, chalk pencil, 100% cotton sashiko fabric (1 yard), pins, printed copies of sashiko designs, plastic sheet for use with carbon paper, ruler with cut out circles/templates, large skein (145 meters) of bright white sashiko thread. Note due to sourcing constraints the exact materials are subject to change slightly; however, the materials kit value will be at least $50 and you will get everything you need to learn the techniques in the class and design more after that!
Bring with you: sashiko needle(s) and palm thimble (or buy at Yarn Farm Kingston), garments with holes for mending or items for embellishing.
(This class is also offered on Sunday, May 25 from 10am-12pm.)

(This class will also be offered on Sunday, July 20 from 10am-12pm.)

Visible Mending: Patching + Darning with Cal Patch
Welcome Cal Patch!
Mending is an essential part of maintaining your handmade or Slow-Fashion wardrobe, and patching and darning are your key techniques. Cal will show you 2 different ways to patch a hole in woven garments: Overlay and Reverse Applique, various stitches that work for each method, and when to use them. Then we will mend a hole in a knitted garment with traditional darning. Whether you try to do it invisibly or artfully, you’ll extend the life of your favorite woolies by knowing how to darn them. Traditional darning works well for smaller holes or areas that are worn thin. You might have so much fun, you'll actually be happy to see a new hole in your most-loved and worn garments! No prerequisite skills.
Please bring:
2 items (woven or T-shirt) with holes to be patched, or a piece of fabric to become a “mending sampler”
Scraps of woven and knit fabric for patches
Hand-sewing needles in a few sizes
All-purpose, buttoncraft, or top-stitching thread
Embroidery floss (Cal suggests size 8 Perle Cotton)
Pins
Scissors
A sock, sweater or other knit item with a small* hole to be darned (can be hand or machine knit)
Small amount of comparable-sized yarn to what the original is knit from (probably between fingering and worsted), can be matching or contrast
Tapestry needles in a few smaller sizes (or any needles with a large enough eye for yarn)
*about 1” or less
Note: Cal will bring extra supplies to share (especially fabric scraps and yarn), so don't worry if you don't have everything! Bring what you have. You can also shop for selected supplies at Yarn Farm Kingston as needed: hand sewing needles and various kinds of embroidery floss including hand-dyed thread!
Teacher: Cal Patch

Regrets, cancelled - did not reach class size minimum.
Ready to go beyond beginner knitting?
Learn to make a pair of toe-up socks at the same time by Magic Loop with Dania. You should be comfortable casting on and knitting in the round. Experience making socks is not required.
By making your socks at the same time, you may experience increased knitting satisfaction by:
Avoiding second sock syndrome, a common affliction for knitters who make socks
Matching the socks to each other with way less note-taking and frustration
Feeling like a genius!
This class meets for two 90-minute sessions on Thurs April 17 and April 24 at 6pm. Regrets, no makeups.
Teacher: Dania Rajendra
Class Size: min 2 and max 8
Class fee $90
Materials fee: We kindly request that you purchase your yarn for class from us, which helps our business sustainability! You will get 10% off your yarn for class, as well as needles/notions for class as needed. We recommend the sock yarn from local dyers Into the Whirled, Crafter Gamer Geek, and Newburgh. We strongly recommend two different colors for your first pair. Please wind or cake your yarn before class.
Please bring:
Print out of this free Knit Picks Two at A Time Toe Up Magic Loop Socks Pattern with you to class as we don’t have a printer in-store. We recommend a hard copy but you can bring a digital file and use an e-reader/iPad if that works well for you.
Needles and notions, unless you’d like to purchase them at Yarn Farm. You will get 10% off any yarn and/or supplies purchased for class.
Locking stitch makers
Your yarn, wound or caked in advance
Tapestry needle for finishing and weaving in ends.
Circular needle with a 40” cable at the size you need to achieve gauge
About choosing your needle:
Success and pleasure with Magic Loop depends in large part on your needles. To make these socks, you’ll need one pair of circular needles in the size that you need to produce gauge (usually size 1 or 2) with a 40” cable. It is important that your cable be thin and flexible, not stiff. Brands known for this include ChiaGoo (the cables on their needles are nylon-coated steel) and Addi (the cables are nylon). If you’re working with interchangeable needles, please be sure to bring the tools to connect your needles to the cables, as Magic Loop twisting can loosen the join.
Cancellation Policy: Full refund less credit card processing fee (effective 4/11/23) is provided for any cancellation up to one week before the class date. Credit towards another class is provided for any cancellation made from six days through the day before the class date. No credit or refunds issued after this time, including no-shows on the day-of. If the class is cancelled by us because we have not met the stated minimum number of students, you will receive a full refund.

In this one-day intensive for beginners you will obtain a foundation in the basics of spinning wool. Learn about the different types of spinning fibers and get hands on experience in the basics of hand spinning, from fiber preparation, basic draw techniques, plying, through to skeining and finishing. This is also a good option if you learned to spin in the past and need a refresher. Proficiency in spinning will come over time with steady practice after your course.

Approx. four ounces of beginner-friendly spinning fiber is provided and included in the class fee.
Teacher: Jocelyn Songco
Class Size: minimum 2, maximum 4 students
Class Fee: $145. This is for approx. four hours of instruction and four ounces of beginner friendly wool for spinning.

We plan to offer this course every 2-3 months, demand permitting. Email us if you’re interested but can’t make this date!

Beginner Lap Loom Weaving - Part 2
In this class, you will learn to warp your lap loom, and add texture through rya knots and soumak, in a very small group setting that is conducive to learning! (In Beginner Weaving – Part 1 we weave on a pre-warped lap loom and learn plain weave.)
